In contrast to many other Côtes du Rhône appellations, Rasteau is located on a south-facing hill, keeping it safe from the strong mistral winds and bathing it in Mediterranean sunshine. The resulting wines are fruitier and spicier than their northerly counterparts, showing hints of ripe cherry, peppercorn, and black olive.
